Odprtje razstave Here and now real, not yet concrete…

Here and now real, not yet concrete... Ben Cain & Tina Gverović,Johanna Billing,Vlatka Horvat Gostujoče kustosinje / Guest curators : WHW (What, how and for whom)

Skozi avtorefleksivno in čudenje zbujajoče izpraševanje lastne funkcije in premikanje fokusa zgodbe; razstava preusmerja pozornost na vprašljivo nevtralnost razstavnega okvira in njegovo vedno znova dogovorjeno realnost. Where am I? This seemingly simple question is the starting point of an exhibition that creates dialogue among three art works which in different ways test the boundaries of “reality” and “place”, thus opening up spaces of ambiguity in a deceptively simple and apparently linear, direct way. What constitutes a place, how are we determined by it, and how do we construct it and experience it in turn? In which ways does a space materialize sentimentality and melancholy, and in which restraint and austerity? How to tell a story about a place and leave it open at the same time?

Deceptive simplicity is in fact a carefully constructed illusion - the works of Johanna Billing (born in 1973 in Jönköping, lives and works in Stockholm), Vlatka Horvat (born in 1974 in Čakovec, lives and works in New York), as well as Ben Cain (born in 1975 in Leeds) and Tina Gverović (born in 1975 in Zagreb; live and work in Zagreb and London, they often work together and also produce work individually) question the tradition of looking at art by transforming the mundane and well known into a field of ambivalence, thus creating a feeling of uncertainty related both to the place of production and to the place of the presentation of the work.

Critical shifts in the dimensions of causality, narration and temporality in art works, as well as the questioning of the influence that these processes have towards a viewer’s experience of the exhibition’s space, encourage a mutual testing of the conventions of the systems of “art” and “reality”. Often defined as marginal, but in fact to a great extent continuously present states such as insecurity, ambiguity, feelings of non-belonging or uneasiness, searching and waiting, daydreaming, melancholy, thus become focal points for questioning the relationship between the work, institution and the viewer. Through the self-reflective and curious questioning of its function and shifting of the “story’s” focus, the exhibition points towards the questionable neutrality of the exhibition framework and its repeatedly negotiated reality.
